Even though it’s a 1300 km drive from my home, this is the place that I need to go to at least every other year. There’s just something in the air and the atmosphere here that relaxes me like no place else.
The Inner Harbor in Victoria is sheltered from the ocean, and has been a popular place for ships for a couple of centuries (that’s a long time by Canadian standards!).
In the summertime, the walkway down by the water is packed with tourists gawking at the buskers. There’s a caricature artist who has been drawing people’s pictures there for at least 15 years, and he’s the best I’ve seen anywhere.
This is also the place where tourists (the ones with money) come to catch a 3-hour killer whale (orca) watching tour. One day I’ll spring the cash for it, but until I’m rich, I’ll be happy with the cheapo harbor ferry ride to the floating fish and chips place where the seal pokes his head out of the water looking for handouts. :)
It’s impossible to not find the inner harbor if you’re in Victoria – it’s the place where all the tourists are headed. Also, the passenger ferry from Washington (USA) docks right there.
(If you’re there, ask for directions to Market Square – about a 10 minute walk – that’s where you’ll find my favorite shop in town, Camera Traders)
