Nazaré Harbour
written by zulupt on October 29th, 2008 (1 vote)

The Nazaré harbor is located in the south part of Nazaré. It is the place where all boats rest, you can see very small boats, huge boats, fishing boats, luxury yachts and all other types of boats.

One of the things I like to watch and photograph with my Supersampler is the arrival and departure of fishing boats, I like to see fisherman repairing and folding their nets, preparing them for another hard day in the sea; the boats arriving from the see in the company of flocks of seagulls.

It is a very peaceful place, you can smell and hear the sea along with the noises of fisherman repairing their wooden boats in the dry dock. Those hard men, with their arms and faces worn out by the hot sun, salty sea and years of hard work have their lives engraved in their faces, you don’t have to talk to them to know their story, their own faces are already an open map where you can see the hardness of their lives, the dangers that they are exposed to every day so we can have fish on our tables, this kind of hard life is only justified by their love for the sea, the need to feel the peace of the ocean molding their minds, making them peaceful persons, they use to say: “once you become a fisherman, you stay a fisherman for the rest of you life”, it is not about the money it’s about a passion (just like in Lomography), they are part of the sea and the sea is a part of them.

The fisherman way of living brings me some nostalgia, it makes me remember the reason why we are in this world, it’s not about the money or our successful career, it’s all about enjoying the place we’re living in and keeping our lives as simple as possible.

Nazaré is a great place to spend film after film, the colorful boats, the fisherman, the sip graveyard, the huge wall painted by all the sailors that passed by, everywhere you look you find a great subject to “shoot”.
