The Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche is situated on the Breitscheidplatz at the Kurfürstendamm in Berlin Charlottenburg. It was built from 1891 to 1895 in memorial of Emperor Wilhelm I. The first church was designed by Franz Schwechten, the royal government building officer at this time.
The church was destroyed in the Second World War (1943). There were lots of plans how to built the new church – amongst others a glass church inside the ruin or to demolish the ruins and to build a complete new church – but in the end the 68m high ruin of the old spire was conserved and now is a memorial against the war. Egon Eiermanns` design was taken for the new church and now surrounds the ruin.
Characteristically for the new building is the dissected walls which comprises more than 30000 little glass windows designed by French glass artist Gabriel Loire.
