The Museum of Modern Art in New York is the most famous modern art museum in the world. It was founded in 1929 by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, Lillie P. Bliss, Mrs. Cornelius Sullivan, and Alfred Barr, Jr., among others. The museum began with just 9 works, and the collection now boasts hundreds of thousands of works of art including paintings, prints, drawings, films, sculptures, books, and photos. MoMA hosts all sorts of cultural events, educational activities, and international programs.
The first building designed specifically for the museum was the International Style building, designed by Philip Goodwin and Edward Durell Stone in 1939. The building was renovated in 2004 by the architect Yoshio Taniguchi, making the architecture as photogenic as the art inside. During the renovation the museum created MoMA QNS where they could temporarily display pieces from their collection. The MoMA QNS building (an old staple factory) is now used for museum storage. The MoMA affiliate PS1 Contemporary Art Center is also in Queens.
One of the nicest parts of the museum (aside from its incredible collection) is the outdoor sculpture garden, open in the warmer months. Groups of fancy old ladies seem to like gathering there. The MoMA store is also pretty cool. They sell tons of design items, books, magazines, Muji stationery, and other stuff—they even have lomo cameras!
The museum’s $20 admission can be somewhat prohibitive, but every Friday after 4pm the entry is free!
