Leiria Carnival

Every year, in the beginning of May, the carnival arrives at Leiria. There come the gypsies along with their trucks, tents and colorful lights bringing fun and amusement to all.
When I was a child, I use to expect nervously for May to arrive so I could see the pit of death, the carousel, the mini roller coaster and many other amusements, but now as an adult I still expect nervously for the carnival to arrive, it is my chance to take the kids to have some fun, to do exactly the same thing that grown-ups did to me when I was young, it’s great to see the smile on their faces, no matter if it is a rebel child or a quiet child, in the carnival they are all the same: just innocent happy kids having fun.
It is also a great place to take some photos, the carnival ambiance, the colorful lights and music mixed with that hard, yet, friendly people, with a hole lifetime bringing amusement to others engraved in their faces (it’s kind of ironic isn’t it?), it always make excellent subjects to shoot, it is the perfect place to photograph people with their authentic expressions and without posing for the photo, you can take portraits, panoramas, mini movies, colorful photos, dark photos, long exposures, etc, you name it! Just imagine: a children eating cotton candy, people having fun, a portrait of the person in the ticket booth, everywhere you look you can always find a great opportunity to take a awesome and unique photo.
Just one tip, before you take a portrait, always ask the subject if you can, sometimes people get a little suspicious, you may loose the spontaneity but you avoid a black eye.
