The "Michel" (Hamburg)
written by graefin on October 03, 2008 , one comment (1 vote)

The Michel, actually St.Michaelis Kirche, is Hamburgs landmark. And it is also the most famous church in the city. With the biggest clock in Germany. Everybody knows this church and you can always see it when strolling through the main parts of the city.

It is always there. That’s why it was once a good sign for sailors. When they came near the harbor and saw the high spire (132metres) they knew that they were in a safe place. Today I still have this feeling when seeing the spire. You just know that you will never get lost in the city as long as you can see the spire.

The church you see today is only a hundred years old because the original Michel burned down in 1906. But the church still is one of the most important baroque churches in the North of Germany. With its red brick and its copper elements the Michel is an impressive monument. Inside you will find the most impressive nave you have ever seen in a church. It does not really have the form of a cross but it is round, dominated by a semicircular balcony.

You can also climb the spire and from there have a wonderful view over the nearby harbor. It’s amazing!!!
Again: Take line U3 to Baum wall, walk across the Gruner & Jahr grounds and then you cannot miss the church.
