Murinsel Graz

When I heard of the Murinsel project for the first time I was very curious to see it: A cafe swimming in the midst of the river Mur! When I came to Graz I surely visited this extraordinary cafe. And I was fascinated by the realization of this project.

When I heard of the Murinsel project for the first time I was very curious to see it: A cafe swimming in the midst of the river Mur! When I came to Graz I surely visited this extraordinary cafe. And I was fascinated by the realization of this project.

The Murinsel was built in 2003 when Graz became European Capital of Culture and is designed by New York artist and designer Vito Acconci according to an idea of Robert Punkenhofer (Art&Idea). The thought was to integrate the river Mur which divides but also unites the city of Graz, into the cities life. So Acconci designed this object – looking like a combination of merged shells. He connected the object with the riverbank on two sides. You can reach the island cafe from the Old Town and from Mariahilferplatz. On the swimming platform you can find not only a cafe but also an open air theater and a children playground.

Inside the cafe almost everything is turquoise and you have a great view on the river and parts of the city.
PS: Some little advice: Don’t go to the toilet when you are drunk! ;D
