In the little city of La Turbie, near of Monaco, you can find one of the oldest roman antique trophy of the french riviera.

It’s called Trophy of Augustus or Trophy of the Alps and is dedicated to the first real roman emperor (because Juliuis Caesar was never emperor…) Augustus, who ruled from 27 BC until his death in AD 14. He built this huge monument (35meters high) to celebrate his victory over the Celto-Ligurian tribes and who always attacked the roman merchants on this strategic coastal way.

Nowadays, you can visit the ruins of this monument and have a walk in the beautiful Mediterranean PARC where it is. You even can climb on the top of the monument and have an unique view point over the whole coastal area with the bay of Monaco at your feet. There is also a little museum who explains all about the site.

To got there, take the A8 highway that goes from Nice to Italy, and simply go out at the exit “La Turbie”; Go to the center of this little town (by the way, a beautiful little medieval old city center) and follow the direction towards “rophhée d’Auguste” or “Trophée des Alpes”. The entry fee is of 5€.
