This beautiful landscaped park was dominated by the original Palácio de Cristal (Crystal Palace), which was an astonishing building, made of iron and glass, built in 1860 for the International Show of 1865 and having the Crystal Palace in London as a model. It was big enough to receive 10.000 people at a time!
Unfortunately this amazing building was destroyed in 1951 and in its place was built a huge domed pavilion. People of Porto gave it the name of their beloved marathon female athlete – Rosa Mota. Today’s building serves as a venue for exhibitions, concerts and sporting events.
It is surrounded by a huge lake, flower beds, and roaming peacocks, all overlooking the Douro River. There is also a multimedia library, an auditorium, a cafeteria, and the Romantic Museum. The romantic style, the magnificent views, the woods, the amazing gardens with thousands of different species of flowers and trees (some very exotic), the lakes, the animals, the monuments, made the Palácio de Cristal’s gardens the most remarkable in Porto.
