NEMO is the biggest science center all over The Netherlands. You can see it when you arrive at the Central station (the central station) because of its extraordinary architecture – it looks like a big green ship – designed by Renzo Piano. It was built in 1997 and is situated on the fundamentals of the IJtunnel.
The name “NEMO” is Latin and means “no one”. It indicates a world between fantasy and reality – like the world inside this museum: you can be a scientist, technologist or technician for one day.
There are five floors where visitors can learn about the world of science in a hands-on way which is especially interesting for children, for example electricity, DNA or how growing up works. But not only children have fun in trying some experiments – also grown-ups are able to refresh or renew their knowledge. When you have enough of science and brain work, take a seat outside on the rooftop of the building. From there you have a great view all over Amsterdam and you can also watch some ships passing by.
NEMO can be reached within 10 – 15 minutes by foot from the Centraalstation. It’s open from 10am to 5pm and the entrance costs 11,50 €. The museum is closed on Mondays. NEMO’s roof can be visited without charge from Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm.
