High Tatras (Tatranska Lomnica)

The High Tatras are one of the smallest and, let's be honest, one of the cheapest to visit mountains in the whole Europe. But, mister Criticism, let's start things from another side. It has high altitudes, huge snow and brilliant skiing routes in winter, and it can offer beginner-intermediate routes for hiking in summer. What is more, the places are clean, beautiful and capturing the breath.

High Tatras is the name of mountain range in Slovakia, as well as a name of a several town cooperation. There are a lot of small villages and towns down the mountain, and they all are in one chain, and this chain is road number 537 if not mistaken. People call it the road of love. Now I know what they mean… I had chosen the village called Tatranska Lomnica, and I didn’t make a mistake.

Without mentioning a lot of beautiful places in town itself (from semi-Disneyland type train to parks and restaurants) let’s head straight towards the cable car, which can get you up to the Skalnate Pleso. From here you can buy another ticket which will take you to the Lomnicky Stit (check the lomostory), but if you do not want that, and it is spring or summer (so no skiing adventures), you can sit there, have a picnic with the wonderful view and… buy a ticket down the mountain (boooooring) or do it yourself, like I did.

The whole trip down the mountain (altitude around 2 km) took us around 4 hours, but we were not in a hurry. What is more – the weather down the mountain in the village was so warm, that we (stupid people) did get only some warm clothes not to mention Nike sport boots, and that is why our trip down the mountain in Spring, when there’s still snow around, was extreme. There were places you could not walk – you just had to sit on the snow and start sliding down the small route on your own ass. Yes, snow becomes water, so naturally our trousers were wet… But it did not ruin anything – we did stop at several places again, for a tea-stop, then again down the mountain… People talk about mountain lakes, like small eyes of God in the mountains, but I did not have enough time to visit it all. What is more, just around the end of our journey we did get into the broken woods… People talk, that there was a huge hurricane and it did KILL the mountain. Even the residents of the Tatranska Lomnica did tell us, that this catastrophe did make a huge scarf in their hearts… Well, rest in peace, my mountain – I will always be besides, always be coming back, visiting you…

When I read your title I had to have a look at this location because my grandfather had told me about it. As a 14 year old he was brought there by Russian soldiers during the last weeks of WW II. He fled from there and walked all the way back to Berlin from the High Tatras!
