Sormiou (Marseille)
written by azurblue on July 14th, 2008 (0 votes)

Sormiou is one of the most beautiful Calanque of Marseille. What is a « Calanque » ? It is a rocky limestone cliff falling right in the sea ; a Mediterranean Fjord.

Calanques of Marseille extend on 20 km lenght and 4 km broad. The fauna and the flora are remarkable and protected. It’s a very dry area, because of the lack of the rain, the blowing wind (the Mistral), and the burning sun, so it is at a very high risk of fire, and it’s not recommended to visit in summer. The best time to visit this place is during Spring.

The Calanque of Sormiou is an inhabited one. The are about one hundred little houses named Cabanons, a tiny port, a restaurant, and a superb sand beach. The water here is green turquoise! So it is a wonderful place for sunbathing, swimming, walking, and even a climbing spot. Don’t forget to bring your own water!
