Sabrosa is a lovely village on the Douro region with beautiful manor houses, some of them dating from the 15th century, classified as National Monuments, as well as the Parish Church. Also, the magnificent mountains that surround the village provide a breathtaking scenario. Visitors to Sabrosa can see the house where the explorer Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521) once lived. He was the first to circumnavigate the globe (1519-22)! Magellan, whose real name was Fernão de Magalhães, was killed by natives in the Philippines. One of the region’s big annual event is the grapes’ harvest, to produce not only the worldly famous Porto sweet wine, but also the many other Douro wines. Sabrosa is also popular for its full-bodied red wine made locally at the Adega Cooperativa winemaking plant.
