I heard first of Ko Chang a few years ago, the so-called backpackers dream, not that much tourism, laid back people and relaxed atmosphere. I`m talking about Thailand’s beautiful island in the East, close to the Cambodian border, one of the biggest islands of Thailand. Ko Chang is also named Elephant Island because the shape of the island looks with a lot like an elephant. The last time I`ve been to Thailand, I didn`t make it there but that time I planned on going there on my way back from Cambodia to Bangkok.
Ko Chang is such a beautiful island, even when you arrive with the ferry, all you see is a small street which surrounds the island and a lot of jungle. Take a taxi ride to one of the beaches where you`ll find a lot of bungalows in every standard and of course for every purse. It depends of which beach you want to go, there are party beaches, where most of tourism takes part and some lonely beaches where you`ll find total tranquility.
Development was going on really fast, I saw pictures of the island some years ago and there was almost nothing. Now you`ll find everything there, whatever you`re searching for. German bakery, English breakfast, Indian curry, tailors, hospitals, full-moon-party’s, paragliding, cocktail-bars up to internet-cafes and, of course, souvenir shops.
But take a lot of money with you, prices for transport and bungalows are fixed, no bargaining, and the prices are higher than on land, because inhabitants know of their monopoly. Enjoy your stay!
