Jasper National Park (Canada)

Jasper National Park was the highlight of my trip to Western Canada last year. It is the largest of Canada's Rocky Mountain Parks and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It consists of broad valleys, rugged mountains, glaciers, forests, alpine meadows and wild rivers. It has abundant numbers of numbers of elk, bighorn sheep, mule deer and other large animals.

My favorite parts of Jasper National Park are the Columbia Ice field and the Maligne Lake. Columbia Ice field is one of the largest accumulations of ice and snow south of the Arctic Circle. You can touch the glacier with your hand and even walk on it! Maligne Lake is where the world-famous Spirit Island can be found. A billboard-sized picture of the island was once hung in Grand Central Station, New York for many years. The island is only accessible by boat. The boat ride is definitely well worth the price. You’ll be able to see spectacular views of the mountains that you can’t see from the shore.

Jasper National Park is not as accessible or as close to Calgary (the capital city of Alberta) as Banff National Park, but it’s definitely more beautiful and, best of all, less tacky and less touristy. If you’re a nature-lover at all, you really should consider visiting Jasper National Park. Don’t forget to bring your cameras with you. You’ll run out of time before you run out of things to photograph!
