Estaque is a working class district situated north of the old harbour of Marseille. The word Estaque means bond (to moor boats) in Provencal.
It is famous because of the painters who came here to find inspiration: first of all, Cezanne, in 1870, and Braque, Derain, Duffy… The view over the city of Marseille and the sea is quite the same as on the pictures.
What else to do?
Eat local specialities: chichi-fregis and panisses!
Along the port, vendors in little kioks sell chichi, lons and rectangular donuts fried in their van, rolled in sugar and hanged to you in a paper wrapping. Panisses are a kind of flat cake made with chickpea flour.
The best thing to do is to create your own vision of “l’Estaque”, by shooting it with LSI’s camera. Look at the pics: the square ones were taken with the Diana+, the black and white the Horizon: the results are very different, aren’t they? So go there, shoot and catch your personal L’Estaque! (And don’t forget to taste chichis and panisses!).
How to get there?
If you don’t have a car, take the bus number 35 or 36 from the Old Port (Vieux Port) in Marseille.
