Vientiane

In such a short time Laos has carved its way into my heart with smiling people, beautiful nature and cheap beer. I arrived in Vientiane after a 12 hour bus ride from Bangkok which dropped me off at 4.30 am at Nong Khai bus station, I sat, waited…finally a tuk tuk driver came and told me the border opens at 6, we went, I sat and waited while the most breathtaking sunset lifted the veil of darkness from the sky…pink and yellow shards fighting for space on a bleak, blue canvas.

The formalities went smoothly and I was in Laos, crossing the friendship bridge. What they failed to tell me in Thailand (and since I do not travel with a lonely planet) the border in Laos only opens at 8. I sat and waited, and after 45 minutes an officer poked his head out the window and told me to approach. For one dollar fee I could get into Laos 1 hour and 15 minutes earlier. Sweeeeet!

Two days have gone pretty fast here, from the lazy lie ins to the strolls down to the river side, to finding a pub on my first night here and watching the arsenal game (5-3!!), going to the markets, seeing the two famous temple sites here, Sisaket and Phra Keo adorned with Buddha’s and gold leaf, sitting drinking beer Lao by the water, making plans that fail, making new plans that fail again, just relaxing, enjoying my holiday, enjoying watching life pass by, enjoying the weather, the people, the food…just being content. What a wonderful state that is. Isn’t that what a holiday is supposed to be?
