Rusnė Island
written by jogintas on May 9th, 2008 (1 vote)

Halo and welcome to Lithuania, the place where you can still find beautiful nature without the “private territory” sign near it (do not know for how long…). This time I am glad to represent the biggest island of Lithuania, which is situated in the mainland. It is not the island which you can find on the map so easily, as it is not in the ocean or even in the sea.

The island is just like the little bit of land in the territory of Lithuania, but the biggest river of Lithuania (Nemunas) did something interesting – the Rusnė; island is named after the little town of Rusnė; (the same name), which is in the Šilutė; district, in the south-west part of Lithuania and it is in the Nemunas river’s delta. It is only 9 kilometers from Šilutė;, the town, where you can find a very friendly tourist information agency.

The town of the same name Rusnė; is very old, as it was first mentioned in about 14th century. One interesting thing – some places in this island are located below the sea level and are the lowest in Lithuania. One more thing – do not try to travel in the Rusnė; Island without a map: study the place before you go into the island through the bridge (you do not need any ferries, as the island is like the place of land, isolated from the main land of some kind of water channel…). As the western part of Lithuania was a part of old Germany or Prussia, the name of Rusnė; can be found in old German papers (Ruß in German).

The island is on the border with Russia, so do not think of swimming to the other side of the island without a visa. One more thing – Rusnė; island has got one of 7 Lithuania’s lighthouses, the lighthouse of Uostadvaris. It is very popular in Lithuania, because there is a little port near it, and the local and visiting fishermen gather there to take a break. You can also climb into the lighthouse and assure yourself, that there are really some places below the sea level. Anyway, if you travel there in summertime, it is okay to take only iso100 films. Other seasons, get ready to soak in water, because the rain is popular there just like LC-A in the Lomography world.
