KUMU is the new home for the vast collection of Estonian Art Museum. It`s newest and said to be the biggest art museum in Northern Europe. Till the opening of KUMU, the collection of the museum used to be scattered around Tallinn, in different funds and archives.

Now it`s all collected together under one roof. It can be compared with its contemporaries Kiasma in Helsinki and Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Including permanent exhibition of local art, starting with works from the 18th century, creation of early art-schools before russian occupation, funny communistic paintings and sculptures of workers, surely local contemporary art and much, much more.

KUMU is a typical new-age poly functional institution, that offers except for its collection other possibilities for entertainment and education. Among the others are occasional modern dance performances, heavy schedule of documentaries and alternative movies and workshops. It`s situated in a culturally and historically interesting area, with Estonian presidential residence and a palace and park build by one of the best known russian tsars Peter the Great for his wife Catherine.

The most impressive room for me of KUMU, is the sculpture gallery, very high triangular room, that accommodates hundreds of busts on a transparent base or on the consoles attached to the wall. I can totally forget about myself when entering the room and walking among the silent heads. Amazing army of various materials – wood, porcelain, bronze, glass, gypsum.

It`s very easy to loose your direction in this huge maze, spend hours wandering and finding new rooms you have never been before.
Climb up to the highest floor of the museum and have a amazing panoramic view of Tallinn city center with multiple towers unrolling in the distance.
