Kudirkos Naumiestis
written by jogintas on May 9th, 2008 (1 vote)

This town is not very popular in Lithuania, and I even could never ever turn my car towards this town, but my girlfriend told me a story about one of the biggest sabotages in Lithuanian history of the 20th century.

There is a railway just near the Russian border, and once upon a time, somebody did put a bomb on the rails just to stop and burgle the German train (during the Second World War), but one man, working in a church, which still stands today at the same place near the river, did see this coming, and he dismantled the bomb.

That’s why the whole mission of Russians was blown apart. And this man was… my girlfriend’s great-grandfather. That’s why I did go there, but I did not think, that I will find so many interesting places there to make Lomographs. The name of it has a secret, as Kudirka was a very famous Lithuanian, whose psalm (or chant) “Tautiska giesme” is the national anthem of Lithuania till our days. So the name is Kudirka’s NewTown, in Lithuanian Kudirkos Naumiestis.

There are some places of interest, including the Kudirka’s museum, the park with a statue of Kudirka and so on, but in the outskirts of it, lie some very interesting museums. For example, the open air museum of some Lithuanian sculptor, whose artworks, well sculptures are located in some living houses territory.

Can not understand the feeling of living in the house and watching hundreds of crazy tourists, photographing my yard… Well, if you’re interested in seeing this town, it is very easy to go there. If you’re coming with your car from Western Europe, take a short turn from the main road near Marijampole and it will lead you to this town. What is more, you can shoot two ducks with one bullet – the Russian border is just some km away, where you can also find some crazy things to see.
