To the west of Arnside, across the Kent Estuary, Humphrey Head is a rocky peninsula reaching out into Morecambe Bay. It's a strange and lonely place with wide, expansive skies, a feeling of emptiness. The bay's quick-sands are all around, and it's reputedly where the last wolf in England was killed... Another wolf lies due south across the bay, Heysham nuclear power station, faced by the less long-term hazardous off-shore wind farm to the south west near Barrow-in-Furness.

Humphrey Head itself is a nature reserve where peregrines nest in the tallest limestone cliff in Cumbria, and hawthorn trees give in to the prevailing wind and claw eastwards like spiny fingers. However, be careful how you get up there. A memorial plaque at the cliff’s foot remembers young William Pedder who came a cropper here, so take heed! Evening, when the tide is far out, is the best time to visit as the sun lengthens shadows in the rippling sands, and the vast skies can make for fantastic sunsets with the Lake District fells as a backdrop.
