Glasgow River Festival

Glasgow River Festival takes place annually on the River Clyde and its banks over Glasgow Fair weekend (mid July). It's a great day out even for those who are not desperately interested in ships and boats and other maritime stuff.

Glasgow River Festival takes place annually on the River Clyde and its banks over Glasgow Fair weekend (mid July). It’s a great day out even for those who are not desperately interested in ships and boats and other maritime stuff.

The setting is pretty impressive with many of Glasgow’s original historic features still remaining from its famous shipbuilding past, such as the Finnieston Crane, one of Glasgow’s most recognized landmarks. Alongside the historic heavy industrial features are some of Glasgow’s most impressive modern architectures such as the Glasgow Science Centre and the Clyde Auditorium.

Landmarks aside, expect to see loads of boats, ships and other floating vessels of all shapes and sizes, some that you can climb aboard for a look around, some that are floating cafes and bars, some that are taking part in races and other displays. There is also Zapcat racing, which is pretty fast and exciting and is part of the Zapcat National Championships.

As well as all the events going on in the water, there is also loads of entertainment happening on the riverbanks and around the Science Centre – there’s a children’s fun fair, science demonstrations, competitions, a nautical marketplace plus street performers galore, like the crazy Deep Sea Jivers captured in the pictures.
