The Fellows’ Garden of Exeter College is an amazing hidden spot right in the centre of the city. It is a completely enclosed walled garden surrounded by the beautiful buildings of Oxford – Exeter College on one side, the Bodleian library on another and if you go right to the end of the garden there’s the best view in Oxford (and hence, the world… well, in my opinion anyway).
From here you can see the Bodleian, the Radcliffe Camera, the University Church and All Saint’s College – i.e. some of the best architecture in the world. Not only is it surrounded by these amazing landmarks, the garden itself is a lovely tranquil retreat. If you come at lunchtime on a sunny day, it’s likely to be pretty busy, but it’s still a great place to hang out and eat lunch. I think the best time to come is early in the morning, before anyone else is around, and then it is really peaceful. Although it’s probably at its best in summertime (all the colourful flowers are out making cross-processed lomos look all the better), it’s great anytime of year, from misty mornings in autumn to snowy days (if you’re lucky) in the depths of winter.
