Dhow building yard
written by hind on May 9th, 2008 (1 vote)

This area is like going back to the past. Located by the creek, you can
walk around and see many dhows, all built by hand – the same way
they were built for 100s of years in this region. Dhows are wooden boats
that can vary in size – small ones to transport people or large ones for
cargo.

Unfortunately, the area where the current dhow building is taking place
is being over taken by construction of new buildings and roads. This
means we will lose this precious bit of history of the creek – all in
the name of modernization and development. The builders have been asked
to move (no fixed date yet, but it will happen in the near future). They
will have to find another spot. I doubt it will be a spot that one can
easily go to, to marvel at the craft like we can do now.
