Chiang Mai

Flooded chiang mai. I touched down in Chiang Mai and a gorgeous afternoon greeted me. Managed to knock 50 baht off my room price and rested until evening descended. I decided to head to the night market for some dinner...got half way there and suddenly the rumors I'd been hearing came back to me: Chiang Mai was flooded!! I'd heard it a few times but I guess it didn't really sink in until now! People were wading through waist-deep water....the night market was definitely out! I had no choice but to return to the seedy part of town and find a semi-decent restaurant.

JUST as I was heading to a bar to watch the footy [9 pm], I received one of the most random phone calls. It was Dhee, a bar-maid at the English pub here in Chiang Mai [who I’d met on my last trip here…briefly]…she said she was alone somewhere and wanted me to come join her for a drink. I couldn’t make out the directions so I asked her to text them to me so I could show the tuk-tuk driver. She called back a few mins later and told the driver where to go…I was a little perturbed about the whole thing coz I was looking forward to chillin’ with the footy then getting an early night…and I hardly knew her! I sat in the tuk-tuk helplessly wondering what lied in store for me.

I knew it was gonna be one of those bizarre nights that only take place when you’re traveling. Soon enough I arrived at a petrol station [!!] somewhere in Chiang Mai and saw her from a distance waving madly. As I approached her, I could tell she was properly GONE…giggling like a child. She headed into the shop, bought herself two spy wine coolers [I insisted one would be enough for me] then took me behind the petrol station to a little seating area. So this is where the cool kids hang out on a Saturday night! it was pretty busy….

We found a road-side restaurant that was showing the footy and Dhee started spilling her guts to me; telling me about her family problems, various boyfriends, how she needs a friend, etc etc. She must be in her mid-thirties but there were no awkward silences to speak of coz she was letting it all fly! Apparently she’d had some Sang Som whisky at dinner and we all know what that does to ya! It was a proper local place, full of Thai guys watching the footy, casting curious glances in our direction every other minute! Definitely one of those classic moments… quite a scene! Dhee ordered me TWO big Chang beers (over 8%) and topped up my glass to overflowing every second…! She ordered some dodgy food that I knew wouldn’t sit well with my stomach but I had no choice but to smile and swallow. After a while she asked if her boyfriend could join us…no worries innit. Soon enough he showed up, nice enough bloke, and took us to another bar on his motorbike. There was more footy on but by this point, I just wanted my bed and rest! When I went to the loo, they got me another big Chang and grilled frogs’ legs to nibble on! Tried a bit [not bad], then the Tom Yum Goong soup arrived. The generosity of Thais is incredible, has to be said…and they definitely know how to eat. The world was beginning to spin so I laid off the beer and politely said I was gonna make a move. They insisted on giving me a ride back to the hotel, which meant I had to wait for them to finish up. I could feel my tummy churning and knew it wasn’t gonna be a good night, let alone morning! All three of us on one scooter, they dropped me at my hotel safely and I sunk into my rented bed for the night and into oblivion.
