Central market

It's the central market of Brive-la-Gaillarde. This little town is in the county of Correze, region Limousin. It's a very rural area, lost in the mountains in the centre of France. Brive-la-Gaillarde is a capital of this area and every Saturday morning, you have the big market on the main square of the city.

It’s the central market of Brive-la-Gaillarde. This little town is in the county of Correze, region Limousin. It’s a very rural area, lost in the mountains in the centre of France. Brive-la-Gaillarde is a capital of this area and every Saturday morning, you have the big market on the main square of the city.

Not difficult to find, because it’s the perfect centre of the city and you won’t get lost in such a small place… :) It’s very surprising, because one of the specialities of this market is chicken, ducks and everything with wings, dead or alive! They sell also very good duck liver paste, many different sorts of meat and of course vegetables and spices. When I arrived in this place I was very surprised about the mood of this market, because I was used to the city markets and this one is a really big country market: the people are farmers and shepherds and women who worked very hard all their life long, who live with the rhythm of the farm and the animals. They surely can’t take Holidays very often to see other places…. And above all, the people are very friendly, even if it seems at the beginning to be a little bit difficult to speak to them. But you just ask them something about their products, their work and their country, and quickly the discussion begins.

They seem to be very happy to speak to someone who has some interest in their lives. So you can easily taste the different products, there is always a bottle open to drink a little bit of the local wine and eat a little bit something delicious. With my camera, they were always surprised to see somebody who takes strange pictures and ask me “but why are you taking this picture, it’s just a chicken?” and so you can begin to speak a little bit with them. A very nice experience!
