Castle Street (Vilnius)
written by jogintas on May 9th, 2008 (1 vote)

Vilnius is proudly named the European capital of culture in 2009, so this is why I just have to tell you a lot of good things about it. And if starting about the old part of the town, the first place you must see is the old Pilies g-ve (or Castle Street).

It’s the oldest and the most beautiful in the whole Vilnius town. This street was used in the old times, and was the main road from Poland to Russia. This street was also the main, leading forwards the Castle of Vilnius, which stands there today as well. The first time it was mentioned was 1530, so you can trust me – it is very old… Kings, Pope’s servants and people from all over the world had to pass this street if they wanted to meet with Lithuanian Knights.

All the buildings were occupied by the most powerful and richest people from Lithuania, this is why today this place is the TOP expensive place to buy a real estate in Lithuania. This is the street, which is near Vilnius University – the first University. But the most interesting thing is that this street was the main place for markets and so on, and this tradition is still alive – you can buy a lot of hand-made products here, listen to street musicians, or just take a little relax-time in one of the million little cafes there. For me, as I am Lithuanian, this street is also very “expensive”, because it is a place, where in 1918 Lithuania gained it’s independency.

Cameras? Fisheye, Horizon, LC-A… Whatever you want. How to find it? You just can not miss it, if you go to the old town – it’s the main street with a tourist information center and all the sightseeing things, you can find in Vilnius.
