Burg Schrofenstein, an abandoned castle ruin, is situated north-east from Stanz (a very old village of the Tiroler Oberland) near Landeck. To get there you need a car (it’s signposted very well) and you should like hiking because you need to get up to the castle afoot. But if you arrived once you will not regret it.
The view is wonderful and amazing! Amongst others you can see three other castles/ruins (Kronburg, the Castle of Landeck, Wiesberg). You are able to get to the door of the castle – a wooden bridge leads to it but you have to be free from giddiness – but it’s not possible to get into the castle ruin because it is locked. However it is impressing enough to watch the building from the outside and to enjoy the view. Schrofenstein was built in the 12th century on a mighty rock and it was very difficult to access.
That was important to defend from possible enemies. Until 1808 the castle was a fiefdom of the Swiss Diocese. It was inhabited until 1844 but in the following years lots of things were destroyed and displaced. As from 1957 the castle has been saved from further deterioration and has been restored. It is said that Schrofenstein was well known for its wine cultivations over hundreds of years, also because of its wine-cellar, the quality and quantity of their wines. Maybe you will find a bottle of a hundreds of year old wine! For your own safety: Don’t open it until you are down in the village again! Cheers!
