MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL
It doesn’t have to be the Hungry Ghost Festival to shoot hair-raising pictures! When? The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. Where? Bishan park is located along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1, Singapore. Let the moonlight lead you there. What? Shimmering trees that outshine the full moon. It isn’t too mysterious but you might want to read more about it before you set out to your mission.
My apartment is only a stone’s throw from Bishan Park but I’m too chicken to stroll in the park during the night. The park used to be a cemetery! And it didn’t help much either that a nurse hung herself on a tree there some years ago. But when the Mid-Autumn Festival comes, it’s incredulous how I gather my courage, grab my James Bond spycam and head there as the usually quiet park suddenly awakens and transforms instantaneously into a spooky night spot.
Who says only deserted and dimly lit places will make you pee in your pants? ‘They’ want to have fun too! Find shimmering trees, embellished with crazy-brillant lanterns, candles and glowsticks that will put all X’mas trees to shame, as they illuminate the park and outshine the full moon. Listen to wolf howling amongst giggles of kids, each proudly showcasing their lanterns of all shapes and sizes with eyes gleaming with joy. Experiment with multiple and long exposures to create spine-tingling ghostly images. You never know what you’ve captured on your films…
