Baku

Among the new Islamic countries of the post-Soviet Union, I tend to like Azerbaijan a lot. You get your kebab warm, photo-venders throw LC-A after you and I even saw transvestites after nightfall on the street. That’s what I call liberal, baby! I was in Baku for a seminar, so food and drinks were granted for free. Yeah! There is an interesting habit for waiters, though.

When you enter a restaurant they most likely say, “We don’t have so many dishes left! What do you want?”
me: “But I don’t know what you offer, can we have a menu?”
“Just tell me what you want.”
me: “OK, can I have XYZ-Schewabschischi?”
“No, we don’t have that. But I go to the restaurant around the corner and bring it to you.”

Now that’s service. For the other qualities of the azeri cuisine I would like to mention one word: Vodka!
