If you want to relax and like nature, sand, sea and peace, Amrum is the best place for you. I spent my holidays there and enjoyed it very much. I rented myself a bike and explored the little island (20,46 km²). One of the most impressing buildings of the island is the islands landmark, the lighthouse.
It is very impressing to walk up to the top and enjoy the great view! But it’s not the only thing you can do there. You can also visit the museum of local history inside a windmill. Here you can get information about the stormy history of Amrum, watch old photos, visit exhibitions of modern artists, etc. At the Öömrang Hüs you can learn about how people lived in the early days.
It’s also very interesting to visit the homeless cemetery where unidentified bodies of drowned persons were buried. If you like hiking make a Wattwanderung or walk along the beautiful beaches, watch lots of seldom birds and listen to the wonderful sound of the sea!
If you are out of breath after this long walks you can stop at the health resort Satteldüne – it’s specialized in respiratory diseases. If not sit down in the Friesen-Café and enjoy some specialities like “Tote Tante” (dead aunt = hot chocolate with rum), “Nebeler Geheimnis” (Nebeler secret = a secret as it’s name says), Pharisäer (coffee with rum).
