Zemaitijos National Park

After sometime everyone of us discovers something very unbelievably interesting even there, where you think you know everything. This is what happened to me, when I planned to visit Zemaitijos National Park in the north part of Lithuania. Zemaitija is one of the lands (Lithuania is divided to 4 main zones), so it is very simple to name a national park with it's land's name, right? What can you expect there? First of all, a very beautiful lake, which is not so deep near the shore, I mean you can walk hundred of meters while you reach the 1.5 m depth zone.

First of all, a very beautiful lake, which is not so deep near the shore, I mean you can walk hundred of meters while you reach the 1.5 m depth zone.

On the other side of the lake there is a small town, called Plateliai. You should look for this town on the signs, if you want to find the park itself. In the town there are boat rentals, cafes, restaurants and even diving teachers (well, in some places the lake is really deep). And the most exciting thing is the nature… Lots of wild animals, rare species of plants and trees – the park is considered to be one of the most beautiful places in Lithuania, so there are no buildings or other “intruders” of the wildlife. Except one… The military complex, which is still situated in the center of the woods. It is an old and now only museum-like military complex, where USSR had 4 missiles, capable to reach long range objects and with nuclear content. It was so secret, that nobody – even Lithuanians – knew about it. It was built by 4000 Estonian soldiers, who were transformed there at night, so they did not know where they were. The museum lady can tell you interesting stories, like when was changed the target and what the target was. It’s like, if French people would stop buying Russian food, the USSR would changed the potential “enemy” inside of this rocket base. Believe me – this park has even a lot more to show…
