World Cyber Games

Gaming is such an interesting and modern field. There will be much to come and the worldwide network is already astonishing. In most of the industrial Asian countries eSport is an official Sport with stadiums solely for witnessing competitive gaming and there are people who earn a fortune playing in a league and doing promotion for sponsors.

And naturally there is a big international event comparable to the Olympics: the World Cyber Games. It is mainly sponsored by Samsung and it is organized by a Korean company. But the location is always new. There has been a few WCG in Asia, but also in America and last year in Italy. I have been to the one in Singapore in 2005. This year it will take place in Seattle. You really have to imagine the whole thing like the Olympics, there are the national teams, who have to qualify themselves in their national tournaments, and they are presented with flags and the whole procedure. There is a smashing anthem with the title “beyond the game”. I promise if you hear it more than twice you will never forget it, and this is not good.

The young players (mainly teens and twins, but there was a reported 3 year old Iranian competing) play in several rounds and there is audience and live-commentating. It is the brave new world for virtual gaming and it is fun watching all these nerds. It is hardly imaginable, but the players truly have experienced stardom in this very scene. And they do a lot for it. 700 finalists are expected and they probably trained like madmen to go there and competing against thousands in their countries. The tournament is quite a prestigious event and cities really dare to hold it. It is a question of money and fame by now and I don’t have to be a fortune teller to predict, that this will go on and on. There is still a little doubt on my side that the WCG truly will be as big in the future as real sport-tournaments.
