Westmorland Motor Club

Westmorland Motor Club was founded in 1910, and organizes motor-sport events around south Cumbria, including the Barbon Hillclimb for cars. It’s a great day out for petrol-heads. The track on the Barbon Manor Estate near Kirkby Lonsdale is 0.162 km long with an average gradient of 1 in 12. It features two bends, and a hairpin just short of the finish line.

Sitting on the grass banking above the hairpin gives a grand view over the upper half of the track and the finish line, as well as across the rolling landscape of the Lune Valley and the LAke District fells. There are classes for all sorts of vehicles, from vintage jalopies, through saloon and kit cars, right up to highly tuned racing machines with motorbike engines. Cars make three solo runs each, with the fastest covering the distance in under 25 seconds. Spectators have access to the paddock area so you can see the cars close up and talk to the teams. Events are also held for motorbikes, sidecars and quads but I’ve yet to make it to one of those. These pictures were taken at the event on 16 June 2007.
