Wellesbourne Market

You can find Wellesbourne Market a few miles from the M40, sandwiched in between Leamington Spa and Stratford. Locating it shouldn’t be too much trouble, as it’s held in a massive airfield which is taken over every Saturday by bargain-hunters. Wellesbourne is ideal for knock-off clothes, imported cosmetics, pic ‘n’ mix sweets, clocks with pictures of Elvis on the face and, well, not much else.
It’s a pretty grim experience, but an experience nonetheless. After you’ve shuffled through the sludge and mud on a virtual conveyor-belt of hardcore shoppers, you may well feel the urge to purchase some of the tat on show, but you’re unlikely to remember it fondly. I’d certainly advise avoiding the Del Boy-esque trader at the market’s entrance selling ‘Pasta and Seafood Mix’ from the back of the car. Also, if you ever wondered where the numerous axe-wielding lunatics of the West Midlands buy their weapons, it’s here. I can’t think of anywhere else on earth where it would be so easy to purchase samurai swords, flick knives, air rifles… etc. And remembering how Tobe Hooper got inspired for ‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ when fantasizing about picking off his fellow shoppers with a chainsaw, it might be advisable to maintain some serious personal space. On the other hand, there’s a fortune teller… I haven’t had the courage to hear whatever she’s got to tell me, but watch this space! Oh, and avoid the Portaloos like the plague which they most likely spread amongst anyone who enters.
