Torino Olympic Village

The Olympic village is built around the former general markets (Mercati Generali), which date back to 1934. It was designed to house up to 2500 athletes during the 2006 winter Olympics, providing also all kind of services to the athletes.

The Olympic village is built around the former general markets (Mercati Generali), which date back to 1934. It was designed to house up to 2500 athletes during the 2006 winter Olympics, providing also all kind of services to the athletes.

An important point about this complex is that it has been built using eco-friendly materials and taking a great care of energy management (photovoltaic panels, district heating network and air solar systems for ventilation), reducing of up to 60 percent the pollution and energy consumption. The buildings have now been converted in social and student housing and office blocks. This place is a cool spot for a Lomographer, because the village is not composed of uniform grey blocks, but of strange modern shaped and brightly coloured buildings, giving you a feeling you got inside one of these drawings kids make, without taking care of superficial considerations such as perspective or gravity laws…
