If you visit Lesvos Island (one of the largest Greek islands in the Aegean, just off the Turkish coast) and you feel like adventuring outside the touristy areas, head for the Gulf of Gera. I advice you to stay in the small village of Skala Loutron and explore the area from there. In this tiny fishermen’s village you will find the Zaïra Hotel, an old olive mill transformed into a cosy hotel.

Everyone at the hotel is really kind and you will never forget the sunsets from the panoramic terrace! Another must is the family-run taverna of the village (if you like raw fish, go for the sardelle pastes!) but beware, the village’s pellican (Giorgos) might come to your table to try to steal some fresh fish. Other attractions are the Panagia church and its breathtaking view of the Gulf and the Asia Minor museum (Skala Loutron received many Greek refugees who had to leave Turkey at the beginning of the 20th century). For beaches, go to nearby Agios Ermogenis (great taverna for lunch!) or Xaramida. You can also get the taxi-boat to cross the Gulf and get to Perama, a very lively and bigger village. If after some days of peace and quiet, swimming and walking in the olive groves, you feel like you need some action, you can always go to the capital Mytilene, only a few kilometers away.
