Shanghai is one crazy city. It’s an exciting and interesting place that, although is really hectic, can have an eerie silence. I guess this is because the streets are patrolled by military and the Chinese are generally a very polite bunch of people.
I went there in January 2006 (winter time) and the City streets were lined with bare trees. It was also exceptionally smoggy. We travelled to Shanghai after visiting Sydney and it was a good job we brought our winter jackets!
There is plenty to do in Shanghai: we visited a number of temples which were always packed with visitors. Some of the architecture is pretty impressive too and somewhat out of context when compared to the brand new high rise buildings that dominate the landscape.
One of my favourite spots was the Yu Yuan Gardens http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuyuan_Gardens which have hundreds of market stores where you can barter for plastic toys and other nonsense. In fact shopping tends to be a popular past time in Shanghai and there are also plenty of purpose built shopping centres selling loads of electrical goods.
Food is also an interesting experience. Generally, ordering food is a bit of a lottery and some of the dishes look less then desirable. They like their stuff deep fried!
