Santuario Fatima

It was May 13th 1917 when the Virgin Mary appeared for the first time to three shepherd children at Cova da Iria, a few kilometers from Fátima. It certainly was a turning point for the small village that nowadays receives more than 7 million visitors every year and it is one the most important religious tourism destinations in the world.

At the spot were the apparitions took place it was built a Sanctuary that people from all over the world visit now looking for spiritual comfort. Any day, all the year round, pilgrims arrive at Fátima carrying sticks and wearing hats, some to pay homage, others to carry out a promise they made when they asked for a favor on a previous trip. Once they arrived at the Sanctuary, the bravest will walk the last few meters to the Chapel on their knees to show the intensity of their faith and their willingness to make sacrifices in order for their requests to be granted. The more moderate ones will prove their devotion by offering prayers, flowers or candles. Even those of us not easily caught in religious fervor are able to appreciate the beauty of the location, to marvel at the displays of faith and, why not, to have a blast visiting the infinity of shops that sell all kinds of indescribable religious kitsch. If you are not scared of crowds and want to enjoy the full experience your visit should be on May 13th.
