Pulau Ketam

On 13th October this year (2007), a bunch of Lomographers from Malaysia went to a small island in Klang for a Lomo outing. We had 11 Lomographers which joined the outing activities and all were equipped with at least two Lomo cameras. We reached the port of Klang around 9.30 a.m and took a boat to our destination which was Pulau Ketam. We reached it around 12p.m. When I first reached there, what attracted me the most was the port of the Pulau Ketam. Besides that, the other thing that attracted me was the boat that was used by the fishermen. It was so colourful and it was absolutely perfect for Lomo shots. So I took out my cam and had non-stop picture shooting.

Pulau Ketam means Crab Island in English, there are many tiny little crabs on the beach of the port. Pulau Ketam is like a small village with population of approximately 7000 villagers. Majority of villager are Chinese. Most of the villagers work as fishermen. Products from this small island mainly are being transported to port Klang and then sent to wet market in Klang valley. The houses on this island are floating houses where all the house are build on the sea. Although it is an island, it has all the basic facilities such as restaurant, stationary, bank, post office and mobile phone shop. Besides that, the houses on this island are painted with very bright colour such as pink, light blue, green, therefore it is a very nice place to Lomo around and you’ll get very awesome photos. Here you also can experience different cultures and lifestyles. This is a great escape place from city air, pollution and traffic jams. The transport of the villagers are bicycles and motorcycles. You can visit it everyday and especially on Saturday and Sunday. To get here, you can take a train from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to the last station which is the port Klang station. From port Klang you can take a ferry or boat there and the transportation fee is very cheap. Each ferry trip or boat trip costs around Rm7-10 which is approximately USD2-3. I would suggest to go on Saturday or Sunday because there would be more people and tourists travel there. It is the best if you can speak Chinese and Hokkian but most of the businessmen can speak English as well. Let the pictures say the words for me and I would say that this is a very nice place to Lomo and have fun.
