Princes Street Gardens

Princes Street Gardens, right in the centre of Edinburgh, sandwiched between one of the busiest shopping streets in Scotland, the railway line and station and some pretty ancient and eerie graveyards, all overlooked by the stunning and historic Edinburgh Castle, perched up on its black volcanic rock. The Gardens contain the Scott Monument – a tribute to Sir Walter Scott – that you can climb up inside to get fantastic views over the whole of Edinburgh.
It also plays host to a couple of major art galleries, funfairs at various times of the year including the huge big wheel you can see in the pictures, the winter market and ice skating rink over Christmas, numerous buskers, pigeons and basket cases (and a whole bunch of rather curious cow sculptures last summer), gigs and live entertainment in the Edinburgh Festival, the floral clock, a big gilded fountain as well as the usual grass, trees, benches and relaxation. It is also the major venue for Edinburgh’s famous Hogmanay (New Years Eve) Street Party, with live bands like the Scissor Sisters playing in recent years and masses of other stuff going on including fireworks galore. You can’t miss it.
