Ponte JK
written by magicbus on April 27th, 2008 , one comment (1 vote)

The Ponte JK (Juscolino Kubitschek Bridge), crossing Paranoá Lake, is today one of the most famous points of Brasilia, the planned city built by President Juscelino Kubitschek to be the capital of Brazil. It was inaugurated in 2002 in his honor and in 2003 it was elected in a World International Congress on Bridges (yes, such a thing exists…) the most beautiful bridge of the world. Alexandre Chan and Mario Vila Verde are respectively the architect and the engineer responsible for its design and construction, which cost around 160 million reis (Brazilian money) (or 80 million American dollars today…). It is a beautiful place, really, because it seems to be so light (despite it weights more than 13 000 tons) and at night the illumination gives it a special aura, as if Brasilia was a huge modern metropolis.
