Mount Pinatubo
written by zoe191 on April 27th, 2008 (3 votes)

The 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo is known as the second largest terrestrial eruption of the 20th century. The explosion came after almost 500 years of slumber and dumped billions of tones of volcanic debris that buried entire farm communities, killed hundreds of people, and changed the world’s climate.

The massive eruption destroyed the volcano’s top, collapsing its crater. Rainwater has since formed a crater lake. Nearly 10 years after the violent eruption, tourists began to visit Mt. Pinatubo. During the rainy season (usually June to September) it is very dangerous to hike there because of the risk of an avalanche of mud and volcanic debris. I went there with my friends and we took a bus from Manila. We then hired 4×4 vehicles to take us near the crater. It was a bumpy yet exciting ride. We still had to walk the rest of the way for a few hours. It was hot because there were no trees to provide shade. Fortunately, I brought an umbrella, which I also used when it rained the next day during our hike back down. The crater lake was beautiful.
