Lanzarote is one of seven Canary Islands and it is situated north-east of the island group. The island is also one of 17 autonomous regions in the Atlantic Ocean. It is about 140 km away from Morocco and about 1000 km from the Spanish mainland. The climate is very mild all around the year, like everlasting spring. It is mild in winter and not too hot in summer because Lanzarote is situated in the Passat zone, which means that there are fresh winds from the North which make the high temperatures bearable. Lanzarote is a volcanic island that’s why (what a surprise!) you can find some volcanoes on it. To see them visit the Timanfaya National Park where you can see the Montanas del Fuego. It is very impressive to drive through the black fields of lava (only possible with a bus tour). All over the island you can find artworks of Cesar Manrique, the islands figurehead artist. To get some impressions of Manrique’s sense of art you can visit his very exceptionally designed house where you can see artworks of Manrique and other artists.

Another interesting sightseeing spot is the Jardin de Cactus, designed by Cesar Manrique. 1500 several kinds of cacti are planted there! There is also a shop, a cafeteria and a windmill, which you can view from inside.
When you want to enjoy a beautiful sight all over the island visit the Mirador del Rio, once again designed by our beloved Cesar Manrique. The view is amazing and breathtaking. Another possibility to have a great view all over the island is to go hiking. There are lots of possibilities to find nice tours on some mountains of the island. The vegetation is very rare (not only on the mountains). That’s why every little plant is protected from the wind by little stone circles. So be careful to not tread down any plants. Also very impressing are the Jameos del Agua. These are volcanic tunnels, caves and galleries but sadly not in their original state. They were redesigned by, guess what, Cesar Manrique. Impressing tough but I preferred to see this great monument of nature in its original state.

This is only a little impression of what you can do on this impressive and amazing island! I did not mention the beautiful beaches and little villages you can visit too. But you can find out yourself if you are there. The best way to explore Lanzarote is to rent a car. There are lots of car rentals all over the island.
