Langdale Valley

In the heart of the Lakes District of England, Langdale Valley is my favourite place anywhere in the world. Its a mysterious valley full of high peaks.

In the heart of the Lakes District of England, Langdale Valley is my favourite place anywhere in the world. Its a mysterious valley full of high peaks.

I first went there as a 15 years old when I went camping with some fellow scouts – we spent the week rock climbing, walking, living on no money and getting drunk on a night in the excellent Old Dungeon Ghyll pub. That was in 1974.

After many years away from it I now try to go and stay for a week once a year, with my family and hopefully they have learnt to love the majestic beauty of the Langdale Pikes, the walk up Stickle Ghyll to Stickle Tarn and the almost vertical scramble across the face of Pavey Ark that is Jack’s Rake. From here you can walk up to Bowfell, traverse Crinkle Crags then make your way over to. Maybe you want to climb at Gimmer Crag, Middlefell Buttress or others.

There is an excellent National Trust campsite (first come, first served – no booking), but I now rent a cottage and try to live in a bit of (dry) luxury. As well as the old world Old Dungeon Ghyll pub there is the Sticklebarn Bar and the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel pub. It’s a place to take your Horizon camera to, but anything will do…

Want to find out more – buy/borrow (but do not steal) a set of Alfred Wainwright’s amazing Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells and if you see me walking the fells – remember to show me your Lomo camera then I’ll know it’s you…
