It was still light outside when I landed at 11.40 pm and I was almost too tired to enjoy the beautiful descent with Reykjavik lit up beneath me. Excitement finally caught up with me as I stepped onto Icelandic soil. This country is absolutely captivating…its beauty far too infinite and overwhelming to describe…words will not do. For the past 2 days we have driven all over the south-west on crazy off-road trails and through rivers and seen beauty too vast to contain. Moonscapes, geysers, waterfalls, lava, hot-springs, volcanoes…mystical & unspoild…laid out in front of you. “Lord of the rings” everywhere.
Fan-bloody-tastic!! Conspiracy theorists have claimed the ‘moon landing pictures’ were actually shot in Iceland and I can definitely see why…there’s just nothing like it. After driving through rivers, seeing some of the most untouched scenery on offer, we met Oskar by the side of some random road, next to a mountain and set up camp for the night. The barbeque was already on the go, reindeer burgers were cooked under the stars and Steve and I were fortunate enough to glimpse the northern lights for a good 15 seconds which rarely happens in august! It was a magical night beneath the stars with food and wine and good local company. I opted to sleep in the camper-van since Icelandic summers rarely get above 15’C! The next day we rejuvenated our tired bones at the blue lagoon, which is another magical experience in itself. We returned ‘home’ and Oskar’s parents treated us to a local speciality: cheeps head! Quite tasty in fact but I couldn’t bring myself to eat the tongue or eyes! Friday morning was the last in this whirlwind trip of Iceland so a farewell ‘champagne breakfast’ was laid before goodbyes were said. At the airport, Steve & I pooled our last money together to buy some Brennivin…you simply cannot have been to Iceland without sampling it…and I even managed to beg the last needed kr100 off a lovely English lady!!
