I don’t know how about you, but for me water is something special… Even when it rains, I feel somehow very different. But that’s not the point of this story. I am going to tell you about the Kayak or Canoe boats in Lithuania. It is so popular, that you can not find any of Lithuanians who still haven’t tried that.

There are some reasons. First, we have a unique place in the center of Lithuania, where different lakes have long and narrow canals, joining them, so you can take your boat near one lake and finish your trip in other lake. Rivers are also very interesting, as you will be probably taken to the south of Lithuania (there are some very narrow rivers), where you can try your luck as well. The rivers are very narrow, but long and not very deep, so you can row very easily without thinking what to do if you crash your kayak, or just turn around in the middle of the river. But there are so many obstacles – branches, stones, even monkey-bridges – so you have to row all the time. Take one of the following suggestions: if you want to relax, then just turn you kayak into the stream of the river and lay down, as you kayak will be easily transported by the river itself. But if you’re more extreme person like me, you will probably try all the most difficult places and risk your kayak. As the river trips can be arranged for a longer period, e.g. 2-3 days, you have to take food, tents, sleeping-bags and so on.

This is wilderness, so please do not think to find any cafes or restaurants. The only people you will meet will be with other kayaks. And what about a race? You stand in the same position and start racing for a short track, before that discussed what obstacles should each kayak run through. As for us, we had a disaster – one kayak did overturn, so two people (we took the two-seat kayaks) had only wet clothes, wet sleeping bags… Well, you can imagine that. But, as for us, we did somehow solve the problem – put the wet things on the grass, that the sun would desiccate it. Please, take it seriously – you can overturn at any time, so that’s why I did not bring any expensive cameras with me, only the old, but very good Russian Orion camera. It’s your call – are you gonna risk, or not? Like I said, there are millions of things and situations you just feel guilty you did not take a good lomocamera…
