Jeepney

There is no other transportation in the Philippines as ubiquitous as the Philippine jeepney. A hybrid of the American jeep, the Philippine jeepney came around the 1950’s to fill in the need for mass transport. From the basic grayish silver color to fully “pimped out” complete with stereo blaring and disco lights inside, the jeepney is a sight to see! The jeepney by far, is the most useful, and most affordable means of mass transport found all over the country. Every jeepney has different routes, depending on the location, and has more access than the usual bus routes. Minimum fare is $0.15, but goes higher depending how far along the route you go, and it usually seats around 10 to 20 passengers, depending on its size and make. It can be flagged down wherever and whenever, on a busy street. Once you’re inside, just hand over your fare to the driver – if you have change, the driver can multitask! He can count change, manoeuvre his way around traffic, pick up passengers – all by himself! Majority of jeepneys has no air-conditioning, and be prepared to get your hair messed up, or to even get sweaty as you experience the ride. It is truly a unique experience, only in the Philippines.

I have googled for websites on routes for jeepneys, but there are none organized. I believe it’s so widespread and accessible, just about anywhere, no ticketing, no rules, so most people don’t need to book in advance, or buy tickets. You can find a jeep that can take you anywhere.
