The islands of Lérins are 2 little islands in the bay of Cannes, only 15 min by boat from the port of Cannes. Go until the end of the port and take one of the 2 companies who make the trips to the islands (see the links). Make a nice little journey to these islands which are a nature protected area and not touched by all the constructions and mass-tourism of the whole Cote d’Azur.

The main island is called Sainte Marguerite and is the biggest one. It’s the first island you can see, because the second one, much smaller, is hiding just behind Sainte Marguerite. The little island is called Saint Honorat and has a Cistercian monastery on it. Only a few monks still live there, produce wine and honey and other things, and they make this since the 5th century, date of the foundation of the first monastery!! They’re the only inhabitants of both islands, because Sainte Marguerite is “empty”, no one is living there. Some people work there at the day (some cafés/restaurants) but everybody goes back to Cannes in the evening. So, a real natural place, when you can walk all along the island (whole tour of 8 km) and bath in the beautiful little places you’ll find all over this island. The sea has a great blue color, so don’t forget your camera!! The monastery can also be visited, but with some conditions to avoid mass tourism invasion… The best is to go to these islands as soon as possible in the morning, because the sea is beautiful at this time and you’ll be sure to be the only one on the island (except the monks…)!!
