Hamburg has so many places you only discover when you take your bike, maybe a map, a bit of adventurous spirit and then go out and hit the street without knowing where you really want to go.

So I went through the old Elbtunnel (enter it at Landungsbrücken), came out at the other side of the Elbe (you have a wonderful view across the harbour from this point!) and then followed the road to the Freihafen area. Warehouses, storehouses, cranes, container, harbour-men, ships, trucks, industry and industrial waste. You find so many things there. Simply follow the one road that leads from the old Elbtunnel to the Freihafen area. You will cross some bridges, be followed or even hit by trucks (be careful!), but there are always road-signs that tell you where you are so you won’t get lost. Also on the road you’ll find the Harbour Museum – lots of things to look at there. After a few kilometres you pass the Elbe bridges, and a few metres behind them you come to the U-Boat. A tourist attraction that also can be visited (guided tours are available I think). So while you drive (or walk) through customs before you enter the city again, you will soon see the city centre namely the Speicherstadt. Et voilà, you’ve walked or driven a very long and interesting “U” in a part of the city that has many hidden corners to discover.
